Veterans Day Concert at Union Station
The Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra and South High School Community School Concert Band are please to host a Veterans Day Performance honoring veterans and those serving in the services.
Directed by Jonathan Brennand and Johnetta Smith, the concert is a culmination of talent of over 160 students from Greater Worcester, representing 65 towns and 72 schools, as they pay tribute to many men and women who have served this country. A highlight this year will be Congressman James McGovern’s narration of "Ask Not - A Musical Tribute to the Life of JFK" with the South High School Concert Band, and additional remarks by Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Maureen Binienda. The colors will be presented by South High Community School Jr. ROTC Color Guard under the command of Colonel Christina Stevens.
"This is one of the highlights of our school year for our students and families. As South High does not have a string program, it’s an incredibly enriching experience for us to work with the Worcester Youth Symphony." - Johnetta Smith, South High Band Director remarks. The concert will feature the Songs of the Services, as well as Aaron Copland’s Variations on a Shaker Melody, America the Beautiful as well as works by Vaughan Williams, Tchaikovsky, Irving Berlin and John Philip Sousa.
"The Worcester Youth Orchestras has been serving Greater Worcester for 70 years and community collaborations have been a hallmark of our organization. It’s a great honor for us to be performing with South High as we pay tribute and respect to those that have served this country. Union Station was the departure point for many troops during World War II and it seems only fitting that we perform this concert there. We’re looking forward to once again filling the glorious grand concourse with beautiful music." Jonathan Brennand, Artistic Director of the Worcester Youth Orchestras.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support Massachusetts Fallen Heroes.
